The Schweitzer Visiting Professorship in Power Systems Engineering

The School of EECS is grateful to Schweitzer Engineering Labs for the SEL Visiting Professorship Program:

Washington State University's School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science created the rotating faculty position of Schweitzer Visiting Professor in Power Systems Engineering. This position was made possible by a generous gift from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories. This unique program has been a pioneering effort to bring distinguished professionals from electric utilities, the power engineering manufacturing industry and academia to share their expertise with students, faculty, and industry professionales. The visiting period has varied from one week to one year to take advantage of the availability of noted experts. The main objective of the program has been to enhance the well-known power engineering program at WSU with more practical state-of-the-art knowledge.

The visiting professorship concept builds on the positive relationship that has developed between Washington State University (WSU) and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL). The proximity of SEL presents opportunities for students to gain exposure to state-of-the art technologies and all aspects of protective power relay manufacturing, sales, and service.

A concurrent advantage for selected visiting faculty has been the contact and collaboration with permanent and adjunct faculty and students in one of the strongest power engineering programs in the county. Thanks to SEL, the school of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science has truly one of the most advanced relay protection laboratories in the field of higher education. Equally valuable have been the contacts Schweitzer visiting faculty have has with the leaderships and employees of SEL, which is one of the most innovative design and manufacturing companies in the entire protective relay industry.

Activities of the visitor included:

  • Conducting seminars of short courses for WSU faculty and students,SEL personnel, and other interested people from industry,
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate classes at WSU,
  • Collaborating on research with WSU faculty and students,
  • Developing and modifying instructional laboratories,
  • Consulting and collaborating with personnel at SEL in Pullman, Washington.
