April 11, 2020 (not a lecture day)

After we finish Chapter 10, we will cover Chapter 14(pdf;ppt) and Chapter 15(pdf;ppt). Auxiliary material: VR01 Logical Time (pdf;ppt) and Birman Vector Timestamps (pdf;ppt).

Homework #4 is out, on Chapters 6 and 10. It is due at 1159pm on Sunday April 19.

March 31, 2020

HW0 is graded. We will discuss briefly in class, including using it as your senior capstone paper.

This week and next we will discuss Project 2 some, mostly Thursday.

Today we will start on Chapter 6(pdf;ppt), and after that cover Chapter 10(pdf;ppt).  We will also cover Chapters 14 and 15 during lectures. We may sneak in Chapter 8 and some on edge/fog computing, depending on how life, society, health, and connectivity go.

We live in unprecedented times! Here is a meme you can hopefully laugh at!

Finally, I am on red alert because tomorrow is April Fool’s Day. In case you want to read of an epic joke I did in grad school, here is the writeup.

March 24, 2020

Welcome back after Spring Vacation and the whole transition to online learning. I hope that this has not been too stressful to you.

Today we will review for midterm testability (pdf;ppt) and then discuss Project 2. This is due on May 7.   However, you will NEED to spend 2-4 hours thinking through the project, how you will design it, etc. This is because next week our TA Reza will have our first Q&A session on it.  You will be VERY behind if you have not given it some thought and initial design. This assignment is MUCH more complicated than Project1, which was basically “Hello, World!” for DDS.  That one should have only taken you about 2 hours, while this one will take some of the best students 20 hours and most of the rest about 50 hours. Plan accordingly, and come prepared to next weeks’ discussion of it!

The midterm will be Thursday March 26 from 300-500. This will be discussed in class today.

March 10, 2020

Today we will start on Chapter 5 (pdf;ppt).

The midterm will be Thursday, March 26, 2020; same bat time, same bat channel.  It will cover all material up through and including Chapter 5.  On Tuesday March 24 we will review testability for the exam and then discuss Project 2.

I will issue a survey within an hour or so after class, querying your resource availability for working from home/apartment.  It will consider:

·         Do you have a desktop or laptop that you could use?

·         Do you have broadband access adequate for:

o   Streaming prerecorded or live lectures

o   Doing homework

o   Taking an online exam with a time limit (1-2 hours)… you would NEED to have a backup bandwidth source (e.g., tethering from a mobile phone)

·         Also internship possibilities at RTI

March 3, 2020

Today we will continue with Chapter 4(pdf;ppt)  and possibly start on Chapter 5 (pdf;ppt).

February 25, 2020

Today we will overview Chapter 3 (pdf;ppt) and start on Chapter 4(pdf;ppt).

HW2 on Chapter 3 is out. It is due next Monday at midnight.

February 20, 2020

I have pushed back the Project1 due date a week, to March 8.  Next Thursday (27th) TA Reza will discuss the project for the first half hour or so, while I watch the last part of a faculty interview seminar.

Today we will see an example of a middleware system: GridStat(pdf;ppt).

February 18, 2020

Project1 is now out; it is due a week from Sunday (March 1) at 1159pm.

February 13, 2020

Today we (almost) finished with Chapter 2. HW1 is now given; it is due a week from this Sunday at midnight.

I have decided to require 464 to read the famous (and classic) “End-to-End” paper, not just 564. You will need it to read it to answer one of the HW1 questions.

February 4, 2020

Today we will start on Chapter 2 (pdf;ppt). Later but also middleware(pdf;ppt) and

January 30, 2020

Today we reviewed “local vs. remote calls” in the intro, and covered Chapter 1(pdf;ppt).

January 28, 2020

OK, so due to AMS problems, last Thursday we did NOT get to the intro slides. So today we covered the intro(pdf;ppt).

HW0 is released; it is due on 09-FEB.

Today we start lectures: Dr. Bakken was just discharged from the hospital an hour before class.
